Science Friday

Good afternoon everyone,

I recently heard a story on NPR's Talk of the Nation: Science Friday that discussed students on college campuses voluntarily "going green". Given the prolific negative rhetoric of older generations criticizing the values and behaviors of the younger, it was refreshing to hear some praise for those in our peer group that are looking beyond themselves to reduce their footprints. Some of the initiatives mentioned would test my sanity, but they're pushing to do what's best despite their comfort levels. One house opted to keep their heat at 58 deg during the winter!

For those who don't follow the show I highly recommend poking through the archives on a regular basis. They have a lot of interesting topics that are frequently relevant to our work. You can easily download the files and load them onto your mp3 players or listen to them on your computer.

I'm your host, Ira Flato

  1. 1. I love science Friday!
    2. It really is nice to hear that we are not all completely terrible. I really like the gray water system in the bathroom, and my last place was kept really cold to conserve money (and, of course, energy!)

  2. Ahhh universities... bastions of new and 'crazy' ideas since, well, forever it seems. I hope that once students leave the confines of the school they take lessons learned outside of class and continue to practice them.

  3. I know we talked about this last week but I just wanted to share that link about Science Friday facing a funding crisis :( Hope things work out for them!

  4. Ted.com is another really great resource for short scholarly talks. Carolyn Steel has a great talk on there called "How Food Shapes our Cities" that I'd recommend.

  5. Great program!

I have an issue with the Sierra Clubs "Cool Schools" survey. I was able to confirm that they didn't send one to IU!

We are moving to AASHE STARS so we can do our own reporting.

Solar powered shades for car parking spaces. That came up with the new parking garage at IUPUI for the upper level.

Some students at IU are investigating co-op housing on campus.

Quiet revolution? Not if you were at AASHE in Denver this week. Hundreds of students presented, including ten from IU. Cooperative revolution, yes!
